Y.O.U.T.H. Council Promotes Literacy and Mental Wellness by Restocking Local Little Free Libraries

Mar 18, 2026 | Press Release

March 18, 2026, Hillsdale County, MI – In celebration of March is Reading Month, the Hillsdale County Y.O.U.T.H. (Youth Opportunities Unlimited Through Hillsdale) Council partnered with the Great Start Collaborative to bring the joy of reading to communities across the county. Together, they restocked all 21 Little Free Libraries throughout Hillsdale County with more than 250 books.

Each Y.O.U.T.H. Council member personally selected favorite books from their own childhood to include in the collection. By sharing stories that inspired them, the students hope to spark imagination, encourage literacy, and create meaningful connections for young readers and families throughout the community.

This initiative is part of the Y.O.U.T.H. Council’s ongoing focus on promoting healthy habits that support positive mental health. Reading has been shown to reduce stress, improve focus, and provide a healthy escape, making it a powerful tool for emotional well-being, especially for children and teens.

“We wanted to do something that not only celebrates reading, but also supports mental wellness in a simple, accessible way,” said a Y.O.U.T.H. President Eve Goodlife. “Little Free Libraries are a great way to reach people where they are and make books available to everyone.”

Community members are encouraged to visit a nearby Little Free Library, take a book, and share in the excitement of reading this month and beyond.
